620bhp 2013 Mustang on the Nurburgring

2013 Mustang GT500 on the Nurburgring

It looks like Ford left some of the more exciting stuff 'til their last day of testing at the Nürburgring. Today, just an hour before the track closed, at the end of a two-week industry-pool booking, their much reported on 2013 Mustang GT500 emerged with extra aerodynamic aids, as you can see here.

It's no secret that Ford America have took the plunge and brought their cars to the 'ring for some testing this summer. Hell, they even went for a spin in touristenfahrten last week. Guys from Roush, Shelby and Ford have all been enjoying this change in the blue oval's normal test program.

Those who close to me know that I have a soft-spot a mile wide for the new-shape Mustang - and I've been stalking them all week. Those 'dive-planes' or canards, used primarily to aid high-speed steering response, are a very new feature and are not in any of the other spyshots you might have seen around the web.

What else I can tell you about this red car above is that it doesn't sound supercharged at all - at least not with the conventional whining roots-type that we all know. Next take a look at this photo:

That looks suspiciously like a nice big piece of aluminium cooler spray-painted matt-black to avoid detection. Thank Canon for RAW format and Photoshop for 'fill' processiong - that's how I got this picture. Now my big question is this: is the bottom half of the shot a seperate cooler? Or is it just one big water radiator? If it's one big rad - that suggests the new car is naturally aspirated.

After listening to the car rumble muffledly past on an open throttle, I suspect the beast is turbocharged and that's an intercooler. Have a look at the bore of the tailpipes in the next shots:

They look pretty big and very free-flowing, right? They were damn quiet. Another reason to suspect turbo-power for this suspected 620bhp 2013 monster.

EDIT: I was just thinking about this, and maybe the new Stang could still be supercharged - but maybe it's a planetary-drive blower instead of the noisy roots type.
