Last night's fiery motorcycle crash closes Nordschleife early

Last night's public session didn't end well for at least three bikers, after an accident left one motorcycle in flames.

At first glance it looks like complete carnage, but as you sift through the scene ahead of you, it will all start to make terrible sense.

The recovery truck is carrying a broken-down/out-of-fuel/crashed car. That's normal. But parking like that, he's obviously "covering" the injured rider of the first bike we find crashed on the floor. A black BMW S1000RR.

The second bike, a silver Aprilia Mille, is parked facing the wrong direction. It's unlikely he rode the wrong way around Galgenkopf, so I'm going to guess it's another, much lighter, casualty.

But the final bike? Wow. I have no idea what it used to be. Now it's just an inferno.

Sad times. My thoughts are with the injured rider of the S1000RR and I hope everyone else is OK (as they appeared to be in the moments after the accident).

The video I was shown, taken just minutes after the accident, clearly shows a fluid spill of some kind on the racing line. It could be a leak from the stricken motorcycle, but the tyre tracks running through it would suggest that the fluid was down before the bike crashed.

Take a look below. See the two lines?

Finally I'll leave you with one video from a good Samaritan who stopped to help an out-of-fuel 370Z at Kesselchen on the very lap that this all happened. After helping with that incident, (which could have been deadly, considering the position of the stopped car) he then made his way around the circuit and was met with the full aftermath of the devestation above....

Thanks to the efforts of the safety teams, volunteers and professionals who helped keep these accidents under control and prevented escalation. Ride and drive safe, peeps!

OMG - looks horrific - hope the bikers weren't to badly injured - being a biker its never nice to see incidents this as its nearly always caused by fluids dropped from cars - had a near one myself tipping into klostertal at 120mph on my blade only to find a nice oil slick on the exit and a stricken e30 bmw parked on the grass 100yds further along -luckily I managed to keep it upright with my left knee - so pulled over at the entrance to steilstrecke and phoned it in - my thoughts are with the bikers -get well soon
