Before I show you more of Jochen's awesome shots from the Nürburgring 24-hour race (he was at ground zero for quite an incident), let me share this with you:

Now on to the photos!

Be careful with the kerbs...

Or you'll be dropping sh*t everywhere! Doh!

Very mucky... a few came off here, despite the flag signals!

Manthey Porsche going STRONG!

KERS-equipped Porsche Hybrid is fascinating - and has been leading despite the weight penalty and power loss (overall)...

As twilight sets in, we'll be sure to bring you more before the end of the race.

Jochen from www.frozenspeed.com is on site at the Nürburgring 24hr race updating his Twitter feed with awesome photos throughout the day and weekend to come. Here's a few:

HJ Stuck in the Audi R8

Popping out early for the overtake

Titanium skid plates help a lot...

The stock(-ish) GT3RS piloted (amongst others) by Evo journalist Chris Harris.

Top Gear has a lot to answer for. It's quite a few years since the pube-headed-one told us all about kudos of breaking the mythical '10-minute barrier' and yet there are still people heading out to the 'ring with the sole intention of doing just that. What follows here is a sorry tale that should be broadcast from the rooftops and can be summed up like this; Don't come to the Nürburgring to break a laptime, just come to the Nürburgring to have fun.

Quite incredible video comes after the 'read more' link, as well as some even-more-incredible quotes from the man behind this soon-to-become-an-internet legend.

With the news emerging that Porsche have claimed an amazing 7m18s lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife with their previously reported, 620bhp, sub-1400kg GT2RS, we thought we'd take an introspective moment to look at the Nürburgring laptime battle...

It's been a surprising number of years since Porsche 'topped' this table, and by many people's standards, they still don't. The truth is that there is NO STANDARDISED table and no overseeing committee or body - only the 'media', common-sense (did I say those words together) and the public at large can even begin to sort this out. Oh, and BTG of course!

Car Laptime Video Link Valid? BTG Comments
Radical SR8LM 6m48s YES Maybe Road-legal in Britain and a number of other countries, but not everywhere. Hero Michael Vergers drove it on street-legal semi-slicks wearing jeans and a Polo shirt. Awesome!
Ferrari 599XX 6m58.1s YES No Not road-legal, not even available to buy! 'A rolling laboratory' is Ferrari's own description of this car! And it was on slicks. Cheating Italians... ;)
Gumpert Apollo 7m11.5s YES Maybe

Bonkers Audi-motored Apollo is a bespoke supercar only available as built-to-order. It's not strictly type-approved like the GT2RS and other machines, but it is road-legal in Germany - which counts for a lot!

Donkervoort D8 270 RS 7m14.9s YES Maybe Donker-whut? Lotus 7-type car with big turbo power. Known in Germany and Holland, but nowhere else. Not exactly mass-produced either.
Porsche GT2RS 7m18s   No Maybe No video yet, but otherwise sounds plausible! A showroom car that will be road-legal everywhere. Only the lack of video could deny this car its glory.
Dodge Viper ACR 7m22.1s YES Yes    Special version of the SRT-10 includes real aerodynamic aids and lightweight components, not to mention semi-slicks and racing brakes. Factory built and showroom spec - when the laptime was achieved, the suspension settings were then used on the production cars.
Maserati MC12 7m24.3 YES Yes

Conducted by the Black Falcon race team, this 'Battle Royale' was done in one day and the MC12 won. It wasn't the ideal day either, and Marc Besseng only spent a couple of laps in each car. Shocks were failing, the rain was getting closer. There would be more to come from all these machines if half as much time was spent as on the Viper or GTR....

Pagoni Zonda F 7m24.7 YES Yes
Ferrari Enzo 7m25.3 YES Yes
Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 7m26.4s  YES Yes Another showroom, road-ready car that is just ridiculously quick!
Nissan GTR 7m26.7s YES Yes   The car whose bold, BOLD claims put the 'Ring back on the radar in 2007. Porsche's claims of 'cheating' were proven to be nothing more than sour grapes. Three years later their GT2RS is finally quicker than an 1800kg AWD 2-lap behemoth... Huzzah!
Porsche Carrera GT 7m28s  YES  Yes Another Black Falcon effort, Walter Röhrl also did a 7m29s in this car.

IF you wondered why the updates stopped last week, it's because I've been at Europe's other greatest race track - Spa Francorchamps! Only 120kms from the Nürburgring, it's not unusual to be instructing and renting cars out there. We had our own RSR day on Wednesday and two RMA trackdays on Monday and Tuesday (with a full compliment of Nordschleife TF weekend in between).

There are more fine photos like the one above at Frozenspeed.com. And below is a video of Ron and me playing in the GT3 Cup car and new Lotus 2-Eleven. Ferrari Challenge F430s just get in the way...
