VIDEO: Manthey GT3RS 991 does a very real 7m09s lap of the Nürburgring

Before the internet is set ablaze by the new 991 GT2RS doing a ridiculous laptime with a factory driver, and tyres hand-delivered from Clermont-Ferrand, I just wanted to share this latest SportAuto video.

It’s magazine road tester Christian Gebhardt going hell for leather in the Manthey-modded, ex-factory test mule 991 GT3RS.

And it’s awesome.

Now back to work you slackers, it’s still 8 hours ’til the weekend!

McLaren fluid spill causes 10-car crash and closes the Nuerburgring early

After a wet and drizzle-filled Saturday Touristenfahrten session, most visitors to this weekend’s Oldtimer GP were waiting for the predicted sunny Sunday afternoon weather to drive their laps of the Nordschleife. VIDEO: Onboard 7m03s in the Viper GTS-R ACR Extreme

Before you watch this video, consider some/all of the following points:

  • This is the first opportunity that Dom had to do a full lap with no limits, no traffic, and a stopwatch.
  • The Viper is off a showroom floor, totally standard, with standard tyres. It’s tweaked; but by that I mean every component has been checked, aligned, and set up for the Nordschleife. This is a very adjustable car, a real sports car. Stock tyres, stock brakes, stock car.
  • Dominik clearly isn’t 100% comfortable with a manual gearbox.
  • He’s happy to admit there’s more time on the table. In his own word, “six or seven seconds, easy”
  • This is an AMATEUR effort, not a multi-million factory test program.
  • The team are trying to come back to the Nürburgring next month…

Viper ACR-E reports 7m03s “still warming up”

A quick update from the Viper team I’ve been reporting on this week. After the tragedy of Monday’s 1-hour session being rained off, the guys managed to get a single clear lap today, with no rain.

And on that single lap, Dominik Farnbacher took the road-legal, bone-stock Viper ACR Extreme around the Nordschleife in 7m03s, according to this facebook post:

Dominik also said there’s more to come, with a sub-7 being possible. If the weather holds, we might even see another run tomorrow before the public session begins around 1730.

I’ll bring you more as I see it. Road&Track are also covering it extensively.

£1.3million Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Speedster hits the Nürburgring

This rather nice looking Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Speedster was probably the most expensive car lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife today. And that’s even including two very blue McLaren MSO-kitted 720s… (more on those later)

The Viper ACR is officially hunting a Nürburgring laptime

They’re here. They’ve arrived. The Vipers are pounding the Nürburgring Nordschleife even as I write this article. Don’t believe me? Watch the short video I made this morning trackside.

After rounds of crowdfunding, corporate sponsorship and a helluva-lot of bloody-mindedness, the guys have managed to get both Vipers here, a crew of mechanics and engineers, and two professional drivers. But it’s been 7 years since they were last here.

VIDEO: AC Schnitzer ACL2 is a ‘Show-Car’ with real Nürburgring “Go”

It’s called the ACL2, and it’s a heavily modified F22 BMW 235i built by German tuners AC Schnitzer. The Aachen-based firm has a long history of tuning BMWs, but still, this must be slightly irking for the guys behind the mega-bucks M4 GTS. VIDEO: This is the new Camaro ZL1 1LE doing a 7m16s lap of the Nürburgring

While the Dodge Demon focussed on power, acceleration and straightline drag racing to make it’s name. The new Camaro 1LE returned to the Nürburgring. With ‘only’ 640hp on tap from it’s supercharged V8, this muscle car can’t be underestimated…

…because it just did a 7m16s lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

And you can watch it right here: Continue reading VIDEO: This is the new Camaro ZL1 1LE doing a 7m16s lap of the Nürburgring

This Sunday is the Nürburgring’s 90th birthday

The Nürburgring Nordschleife isn’t the oldest racetrack in the world, but with 90 years of racing under its belt, but I’m going to go on record as saying it’s the best.

Construction started in September 1925, but the epic circuit we all know and love wasn’t completed until late Spring in 1927.

And that first race? Continue reading This Sunday is the Nürburgring’s 90th birthday

VIDEO: Bike vs. Car, it’s ugly.

Now any collision between a ton-and-a-half of car and some poor bloke on a bike is going to be ugly.

But luckily for the biker, he lives to ride another day. If he feels like it…

…because from this angle I’ve got to say: damn, he really screwed that up.

Watch for yourself:

Points I would note, in no particular order:

  1. The Porsche Cayman GT4 is on the left side of the track, which is the correct side to overtake.
  2. The biker had panicked and is running wide. It’s arguable that he would have crashed whether or not the Porsche was there.
  3. No doubt the biker will point out that a Porsche passing on the outside is enough to put most people off their line.
  4. Lastly, passing in a corner is a really dodgy move. I’m not gonna say I’ve never done it, but passing a wobbly bike with inches to spare?

So with the benefit of perfect hindsight it becomes obvious that as the biker, it’s almost unnecessary to worry about who’s fault it is. Because tarmac hurts.

And as a car driver, leave plenty of room for bikers.
