Tech-hungry anoraks might have already seen the 360-degree demo videos on YouTube (my favourite being this wingsuit jump). Of course, my first thought was “wouldn’t a lap of the Nordschleife be cool with this system?”… of course, it IS cool!
Sunday’s public session was rudely interrupted by a disgruntled tractor driver, who tried to drive on to the Nürburgring Nordschleife while alledgedly shouting all manner of obscenities…

For those fans dedicated (or rich) enough to hand over €990 for a single day, it’s hard to argue that GetSpeed didn’t deliver a perfect day. The idyllic weather might not have been guaranteed in the price, but the clear running and less than 20 cars per lap on a 20.8km certainly was.
Of course, this being Nürburgring, it wasn’t without its dramas (but more on that at the end).
If it’s a choice between lapping with speed limits and not lapping at all, I’ll take the speed limits. It’s a shame we are in this position, and it sucks that the suits and bean-counters can’t tell the difference between a freak, flying GT3 car and the rest of us. But let’s be honest… Practically the limits probably affect less than 10% of the traffic. I just hope that the management understand the severity of the PR situation and look for a better solution ASAP. Personally, I would lament track modifications such as levelling the jumps, but we have to accept that this has happened many times before. The 30s nordschleife was different to the 50s, was different to the 70s, was different to the 80s, etc… Let’s stay positive and try to support the ‘Ring. 👍🚗🏁
It feels like there’s nothing but bad news from the Nürburgring some weeks, and maybe that’s why this email didn’t arrive until the end of the working day on Friday…
We hoped that they would be a temporary fix, a band-aid over the wound caused by just one car having a freak accident. But with speedtraps and redflags on a trackday this week, it looks like now they’re here for everybody.
In the latest print issue of Sport Auto, Marcus Schurig wrote an excellent column on the issue, but also admitted that Sport Autos famous ‘superlap’ laptimes are subject to the same (arguably ridiculous) rules.
What does that mean? Who will it affect? Let’s find out…
In twenty years time we’ll all look back at three-pedal cars and wonder how we managed to drive them.
Or maybe we’ll just look back at videos like this and remember that driving cars is fun.

There are a lot of differences opinion on the Nordschleife. Hell, it’s a race track and it’s full of men. Emotions can run high.
But when you get emotional (and angry) on the world’s most demanding racetrack, then things can also get dangerous.
After the cancellation of some very big events, the Nürburgring Nordschleife calendar is absolutely crammed with full days of TouristenFahrten (public driving). This weekend should have been the “Green Hell RockFestival“, but instead it was four full days of open lapping.
And today (Monday) the place is deserted…
