Before you watch this video, consider some/all of the following points:
- This is the first opportunity that Dom had to do a full lap with no limits, no traffic, and a stopwatch.
- The Viper is off a showroom floor, totally standard, with standard tyres. It’s tweaked; but by that I mean every component has been checked, aligned, and set up for the Nordschleife. This is a very adjustable car, a real sports car. Stock tyres, stock brakes, stock car.
- Dominik clearly isn’t 100% comfortable with a manual gearbox.
- He’s happy to admit there’s more time on the table. In his own word, “six or seven seconds, easy”
- This is an AMATEUR effort, not a multi-million factory test program.
- The team are trying to come back to the Nürburgring next month…

They did it, and they shot the video to prove it. Ride onboard with the new 2017 Lamborghini Huracan Performante for a ridiculous 6m52s industry-length lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Holy crap. Batshit fast. But rather controlled, don’t you think? Nothing like crazy Aventador lap.
Maybe it’s the low-down bumper-cam hides some of the cockpit drama, but there’s virtually no understeer on display. This is an impressive car, and the much vaunted active arrow are certainly having an effect.
But there’s always a ‘but’, isn’t there?
Here it comes; the 2016 track is faster thanks to the modifications at Flugplatz. That’s not opinion, that’s fact. Just look at the many sub-8 VLN laps this year for proof.
But is it five whole seconds faster? The Porsche 918 hybrid did 6m57s remember?
Next: tyres. Wow! The car looks like it could be on slicks, it’s so planted. Officially, they’re PirelliTrofeo R, in case you’re wondering!
We need to know more…
It’s an argument that’s probably as old as the Nurburgring Nordschleife itself. When an overtake results in a crash, both drivers will normally blame each other. It’s no secret that the guys at Affalterbach are gunning for Porsche with their latest range of supersports machinery. And when I first saw the green beast, the AMG GT R, I guessed it was aimed at the 991 GT3.
So imagine everybody’s surprise when, in a “real-world” Sport Auto lap, it goes even faster than the money-can’t-buy Porsche 918 Spyder!
